Living Up To Societies Gender Stereotype - Free Essay Example

When men are described as strong, independent, brave, and tough. Women are described as submissive, sensitive, talkative, and maternal. Stereotype is defined by a standardized mental picture that is held in common by members of a group and that represents an oversimplified opinion, prejudiced attitude, or uncritical judgment (Merriam-Webster).There are many stereotypes to be held about gender roles and their impact on men and women. Even though biology determines sex, these stereotypical roles are learned norms for society. There are many biological differences between male and female, and gender is viewed as a social position that affects ones mental development. Gender roles are subject to change over time just as societies mental development changes with time, stated in Gender roles and gender role conflicts (Pearlstein). These stereotypes are faced by society every day, young children watch their parents and role models and are receptible to the actions seen. Claire Vaye Watkins portrays gender roles in her short stories, The Last Thing We Need and Wish You Were Here. The two short stories go hand in hand with both lead characters not meeting the standards society has in place for their genders. When Wish You Were Here started, lead character, Marin and her husband live a happy life until they move to this adobe (101) town where satisfactory seems to subside and is described by Marin that she feels this little town tries too hard (101). The story goes on as the couple have conceived a child, this is the sight of gender roles shown in the story. Along with the growing child in Marins body comes the growing of arguments and tension between the couple, the story says Before the child is anything, it is a catalyst for fights.(102) This is explained by Pearlstein, Researchers have found that the gender roles of married couples tend to become more clearly defined following the birth of a child. Often the woman assumes the primary responsibility for child care and the greater part of the housework. This is not what happens in Watkins story; although, readers are shown bits and pieces of Marins maternal instincts, Marin does not care much about eating healthy, exercising, or compromising on things to be shown to the child once in this world. Her husband, Carter, wants to know all the details about Marins action through the day and everything that could potentially affect their child. He is very involved, and took the maternal position in the story once the child, referred to as It(107), was born. He is a hand on a father who wanted a say so in his childs life and the day to day variables affecting him. The story uses Carter taking this strong interest in his child as a way to tear down the stereotypical father who would be taking the role as bringing income for the family and allowing the mother to presume the responsibility of the children. In the same way, the story shows Marin as a mom who does not take the maternal job as Pearlstein describes womens roles often are. This continuing theme of gender roles being taken lightly follows as Marin drinks more than a few beers and smokes a joint. This is not the image of mothers that come to mind; otherwise imagined as a traditional image of a woman with combed hair, and a nicely matched outfit in the kitchen cooking or helping her children, not kicking back smoking a joint and drinking beer. This shows how societies views on what women and men shall be doing affect the views on how genders should act and what roles those genders shall be responsible for. Watkins short story in Battleborn, The Last Thing We Need starts with a male lead crumbling beneath the pressure of his innocence being taken away too soon and having to become a masculine figure who was too much, too soon for Thomas Grey. The narrator shows the readers the wavering mental stance of Grey as the story is a compilation of letters Grey has written to an owner of a Chevy Chevelle, a ?66 (26). Grey found this vehicle wrecked and abandoned, with pictures and letters in the inside; he sees more than a glimpse of the owner. He sees a glimpse of his late childhood, a glimpse of being in high school, working a night shift at a gas station where a boy in a small town drives up in a Chevy Chevelle 66 and comes in with a gun. The fucking money, Frankie said (35). In this moment Thomas Grey grabs the before mentioned gun from under the counter, and as he pulls the trigger as the fast moving bullet leaves the barrel so does Thomas Greys innocence leave him. Thomas Grey is told over and over he did the right thing, but this does not clear him of the guilt he feels for his actions. This moment in his life follows him to college to meeting his wife and keeping the encasing action to himself. The letters written to a man never met by Grey, someone who the story does not answer the questions of if he is still alive, receiving the letters or the relevance to the man; the only connection and information given is that he is the owner of the car that brings back this awful life changing event in the narrators life. This moment in Greys life brings him to lie, run away, and makes him a coward to the past. In the article The Burden of Being a Man in a Patriarchal Society, Strength was found to be prime masculine stereotype in men this is what is expected and Grey doesnt show this with his weary letters to the man unknown to him and the obsession to a car that his wife describes as That man, the one who knows a 66 when he sees one, thats not the man she married(37). Expectations of men are explained as, Once a boy grows, his habits of dressing, eating, attitudes, and relationships are all socialized constantly with the thought of masculinity. (Adil) Thomas Grey grew into a man with this daunting life that a rightful action affects his daily roles, as a father, as a husband, and as a man. Conforming to societies gender roles is how genders learn the difference between what society deems fit for their themselves.Human beings begin to develop gender identities very early in life as they pick up on cues and clues given off from the sociocultural contexts in which they find themselves. As people and institutions demonstrate socially appropriate ways of being male or female, children become apprentices and learn what it means to be a boy or girl in their culture(Csinos). The teaching of gender specific roles begins immediately with infancy. This continues as the child grows, mothers and fathers play roughly with boy children than with girl children. As children continue to grow boys are supposed to run errands earlier than are girls. Boys are told boys dont cry, and they are to control their more feminine emotions, while girls are taught to embrace their emotions. Gender roles taught to children conform them into the men and women society expects them to be, with the exclusion of a few, including Marin, Carter, and Thomas Grey. Being masculine or feminine is a norm learned from values society forces upon men and women every day. Everyone is conformed into these norms, and it is up to the people to decide how they grow with what they have been taught and shown, or will the people dismay from the norms and become a maternal figure as a father or become a weak man, who to a reader could be mentally unstable. It is up to the people to decide to fall into the gender roles or to create personal gender roles. Works Cited Adil, Farah, et al. The Burden of Being a Man in a Patriarchal Society. Thomas Hobbes And John Locke - 1256 Words

Differing greatly from the views of Plato, Socrates (as seen through Plato’s teachings), and Aristotle, modern philosophers focused more prominently on human nature instead of the pressing matters of diverse government systems. Granted, Thomas Hobbes and John Locke do discuss political systems to some extent, but they are nowhere near as invested in the ideas of the just and political systems which enticed Plato and Socrates. John Locke was a forward thinker who believed that man is inherently a social animal. Thomas Hobbes takes the counter to this theory with the belief that man is not a social animal at all, and the constructs of society can only work through the power of the state. Both of these men are considered modern thinkers for many reasons, even though their ideas might not always line up. The state of nature is an issue that both Locke and Hobbes took into consideration. Locke believed that within the state of nature, all men had the rights to life, liberty, and pr operty. He believed that all men were free and that they were all equals, leading to a stronger idea of democracy. Hobbes took the stance of an absolute monarch as ruler. People are born with rights which they surrender to their monarch. The monarch in turn gives them protection, which brings forth of the every-so-important social contract. With Locke’s democratic view, and Hobbes’ monarch, their beliefs become clear about the abilities of man himself. Michelle Alexander s The New Jim Crow - 1495 Words

Baker, Anderson, and Dorn (1992) talk â€Å"A Critical Thinking Approach† giving the readers six guidelines to follow when critically assessing any literary work, all of which can apply to Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow. The first guideline is about how accessible is her work. Throughout the book, Alexander made her work as clear and concise as she possibly could by explaining certain points over again in a different chapter to make sure that the audience understands what she is trying to say. Any explanation given, whether it is her own thoughts or other evidence/data is thoroughly talked about and written in such a way that the readers can easily digest its meanings. The next guideline is Authenticity. Alexander†¦show more content†¦Alexander is very specific in her book and does not use many generalization. The generalizations that are used throughout her book are careful in the sense that they cover only the material she needed to make her point to t he audience. In her first chapter, Alexander tell the history of American slavery and Reconstruction Era, etc., which was generalized to help the readers understand where Michelle was coming from in her evidence that the Jim Crow still exists today. The fifth guideline is Expertise. Within her book, Michelle Alexander has stories from real people who have been through the process of the criminal justice system Jarvious Cotton and Drake are to name a couple. She also relies on the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who was imprisoned, for speaking out about the discrimination and leading the nation into Civil Rights Era. By reading, King’s words and learning about the system from those who have been in it and the hardships mass incarceration causes, Michelle Alexander can giver her readers first hand accounts of the negative effects that come from today’s discrimination. The last guideline from Baker, Anderson, and Dorn, is Objectivity. Michelle Alexander is objective for much of the book through the history and parallels of today’s Jim Crow and the original laws; however there were areas where she became subjective mainly when she was talking about her personal journey to realizing that Jim Crow has yet to

Family Law Human Rights of Women and Children

Question: Discuss about the Family Law for Human Rights of Women and Children. Answer: 1. In the present case, Karen and Leonardo who through a dating programme married each other after a whirlwind romance. They exchange marriage vows in church in the presence a pastor. Prior to the said marriage, Karen had made it clear to Leonardo that she has no interest in sexual intercourse and wishes to marry only for companionship. Leonardo agreed to the same but eventually changed his mind however Karen refused to engage in sexual intercourse with Leonardo. Thus, Leonardo met another woman and wishes to complete his family with her and seeks advice on ending marriage with Karen. Thus, the issue in the said case is whether the marriage between Karen and Leonardo valid and if so what options does Leonardo have ending the said marriage. Marriages in Australia are governed under two categories which are civil marriages and Muslim marriages. The civil marriages in Singapore are governed by the Registry of Marriage (ROM) according to the laws of Women Charter in Singapore. The civil marriages are conducted between couples when both the parties are non-Muslim (Oswin, 2010). The process of solemnizing a civil marriage in Singapore is very easy and the couple requires registering a date at the Registry of Marriage (ROM) or its website. The chosen date should be at least 21 days before the date of registration. A license is only given after the couple is physically available to declare the following details about their marriage:- The parties in the marriage are both above the age of 21 years If either party is minor and not previously married, the consent of the required person or the High Court is taken in writing (Teo, 2010). The parties to the marriage are 18 years and above at the time of the marriage If any of the party is previously married, they are legally divorced or a widow or a widower. No further legal impediment to the marriage exist (Weiss, 2010). The law in Singapore recognizes the concept of voidable marriages. A voidable marriage is one in which continues to remain valid despite the existence of a flaw in its validity until one of the party in the said marriage elects to terminate it. Section 106 of the Women Charter in Singapore lists the marriages which can be voidable at the option of one of the party to the marriage. Section 106(b) of the Women Charter states that a marriage in Singapore which has not been consummated due to one of the parties unwillingness to do the same can be a valid ground for electing the marriage to be voidable by the other party (Oswin, 2010). In order to prove that a said marriage is voidable, one party intending the same has to file a Writ of Nullity and prove that one of the reasons specified in section 106 of the Womens Charter exists. However, the Court can refuse to pass the Judgment of nullity making the marriage voidable if the Court believes that the plaintiff was aware of the existence of one of the reasons mentioned under section 106 of the Women Charter like intention to not consummate the marriage or pregnancy of defendant and still went ahead with the said marriage. Thus, in the said case, the only choice the plaintiff has is to file for a divorce (Tan, 2014). In Singapore, divorce is not granted before three years since the date of marriage except exceptional cruelty or hardship. The spouse who initiates the said divorce has to prove the existence of such exceptional hardships. Thus, an early divorce is granted in Singapore for reasons like mental distress, physical and mental assault, unusually adultery cruel in nature, Adultery-induced pregnancy or homosexual tendencies in spouse. The rules of divorce in Singapore are given under Chapter 1 section 91 to section 95 in the Womens Charter in Singapore (Leong, 2010). Thus, in the said case Leonardo married Karen knowing the fact that she is not interested in consummating the said marriage and wishes to marry just for companionship. In Singapore, as seen above under section 106 of the Women Charter a marriage can be voidable at the option of one of the party to marriage if they prove the existence of one reason stated under section 106 of the Women Charter (DUARA, 2010). The Women Charter states that a marriage which is not consummate due to unwillingness of one spouse can be elected as voidable by the other spouse. However, the process has to be initiated by filing a writ for the same in the Court. However, evidence of the marriage not being consummated has to be proved. However, if the defendant in the said case proves that the plaintiff has prior knowledge of existence of the intention of the defendant to not consummate the marriage, Court may refuse to grant the order of nullity (Kum, 2011). Thus, in the said case, Court will refuse to grant Leonardo with a certificate of nullity to make the said marriage voidable on the ground of unwillingness on part of Karen to consummate their marriage as he aware of the said prior to his marriage (Kim, 2010). Divorce proceedings are the next option for Leonardo. However, under the law in Singapore according to section 93 of the Women Charter married couples in Singapore cant file for divorce before 3 years from the date of their marriage. However, an early divorce is granted in case of exceptional cruelty and hardship. Thus, Leonardo in the said case has to prove that to exceptional hardship in order to obtain a divorce within 3 years of marriage. Thus, Leonardo in the said case will have to prove that he suffers from mental stress due to Karens unwillingness to consummate their marriage. The term mental stress has a very broad meaning and can include a number of things which includes stress from spouses unwillingness to involve in sexual intercourse. Thus, Leonardo can apply for early divorce by filing for a writ of divorce in the appropriate court in Singapore stating the ground on mental stress (Yeen, 2015). However, if Leonardo discovers that Karen is pregnant with a child of another man who she is secretly seeing, the ground of divorce would change. In the said case, the ground for divorce would be adultery induced pregnancy. Under the divorce law in Singapore, early divorce is granted within 3 years of marriage on the grounds of adultery or cruel adultery. Deciding whether an event falls under the preview of mental stress is on the Courts discretion, however adultery is a sure ground under which divorce is granted (Leong, 2011). Additionally, even divorce proceedings after 3 years have a valid ground of divorce which is adultery. In the said case, Karen refuses to engage in sexual intercourse with her husband Leonardo but started secretly seeing another man. Moreover Karen got pregnant with the child of another man who makes Leonardo eligible to be granted divorce from Karen on the grounds of adultery and adultery induced pregnancy (Lee, 2011). Thus, in the said case Leonardo can file for a divorce on the grounds of mental stress he suffered due to Karens unwillingness to consummate their marriage, however, on discovering about her pregnancy, he can file for a divorce on the grounds of cruel adultery or adultery induced pregnancy. 2. In the present case, Fredrick and Winnie were married for 12 long years. In the recent times, Fredrick and Winnie were quarrelling a lot leading to Fredrick staying out late and returning home drunk. Eventually, Winnie was tired of Fredrick and started dating her neighbor named Barry. When Fredrick found out about his wifes Winnies affair, he kept quite hoping it to be a passing affair and the Winnie would eventually resume loving him. However, nothing as Fredrick hoped happened and Winnie continued to find faults in Fredrick to the extent of comparing his sexual abilities with Barry, As Fredrick could not take it any longer, he asks for advice on filing for a divorce (Yeoh, Leng Dung, 2013). The family law in Singapore recognizes two types of marriages which is civil marriage and Muslim marriage. Divorce proceedings for civil marriages are conducted in the Family Courts in Singapore. Divorce can be obtained by a couple in Singapore Family Courts if both the individuals in the said marriage are Singapore citizens, are domiciled or have lived in Singapore for at least 3 years (Jones, 2014). The rules and regulations under the Women Charter regulate and govern divorce proceedings in Singapore. The Women Charter is an Act passed by the Singapore Parliament in the year 1961. The said Act was passed to protect and safeguard the rights of women in Singapore and ensure equality to women in relationships like marriage and divorces (Soon, 2013). Additionally, the Act provides for rights and obligations of husband and wives in relation to marriage, divorce and maintenance. In case a marriage is not working well, couples opt for divorce which is very common in the recent times. Under the Women Charter in Singapore, couples staying in Singapore at the time of initiation of divorce proceedings can apply for divorce in Singapore or if the said couple has resided in Singapore immediately three years before the initiation of the divorce proceedings. The Women Charter under section 93 also states certain other conditions on couples divorcing in Singapore (Sun, Chong Lim, 2014). This condition states that a couple who is married in Singapore under the civil marriage laws cannot initiate divorce proceedings three years prior to their date of marriage. Moreover, divorce is granted only when a marriage between two parties is broken down irretrievably which infers that it is impossible to save the said marriage. However, if one of the spouses establishes exceptional cruelty divorce is granted before or within 3 years of marriage. This is called early divorce. The spouse who initiates a divorce proceeding is called plaintiff and the other spouse who has to defend the said proceeding is called the defendant. Thus, the plaintiff has to establish one of the following grounds which are listed in section 93 of the Women Charter to validly justify initiating divorce proceedings in Singapore: The defendant has engaged in adultery and the plaintiff finds it impossible to live with the defendant Unreasonable behavior on part of the defendant which makes it impossible for the plaintiff to live with or reside with the defendant The defendant has deserted the plaintiff for a minimum period of 2 years The plaintiff and defendant consent to the divorce and have lived part for 2 years The plaintiff and defendant have lived apart for a period of 4 years. In the said case no consent is required for a valid divorce (Yeoh, Leng Dung, 2013). For initiating or commencing divorce proceedings in Singapore, one can file a writ of divorce in the family court in Singapore in person or by hiring a professional lawyer to do the same. To prove adultery undersection 95(3)(a) of the Womens Charter, the plaintiff has to prove two elements. These two elements are the fact that adultery has taken place and it is intolerable and impossible to love with the defendant any more. The standard of proof in adultery cases is very high and evidence in the form of confession, evidence by private investigator or detective and pregnancy or birth of child due to adulterous relationship can be used to establish adultery. In case, the plaintiff fails to gather evidence which establish adulterous relationship of their partner, divorce can be initiated on the grounds of unreasonable behavior (Yeen, 2015). Additionally, the Women Charter states that after the plaintiff has had the knowledge of their spouse involvement in adulterous relationship and continues to live with him/her for a period of six months, the plaintiff losses its chance to be granted divorce based on the ground of adultery. Therefore, in the said case, Fredrick and Winnie were married for more than three years which makes them eligible to apply for initiating divorce proceedings in Singapore. In the said case, Fredrick and Winnie were fighting regularly after 12 years of marriage stay out late in the night and returning drunk (Jones, 2014). Winnie being tired of the said situation started having an affair with their neighbor Barry. When Fredrick discovered about his wifes affair, he kept quiet for a while hoping the same to be a passing affair and that Winnie would love him back. However, Winnie started can in the said case apply for a writ of divorce in the Singapore Family Court on the grounds of adultery and impossible to live with partner. Fredrick clearly justifies the two elements which are required to be proved in adultery that is presence of adulterous relationship and impossible to live with partner. However, he has to establish the adulterous relationship of his wife Winnie and Barry and state that he tried to live with her but she made it impossible by her comments. Additionally, Fredrik will lose his chance to be eligible to receive divorce on ground of adultery if he stays with Winnie for 6 months after discovering about her affair with Barry (Lee, 2011). Thus, in the said case, assuming Fredrick has not lived with Winnie for 6 months after discovering about her affair can file for a divorce in Singapore on the ground of adultery as states in section 95(3)(a) of the Womens Charter. Slutwalk Professor Ramos Blog

Slutwalk It was the summer of 2012, my sister sent me an invite on Facebook to attend this rally called Slutwalk in Riverside. I then googled â€Å"Slutwalk† to see what it was about and it’s a march organized as part of a movement protesting social attitudes that blame and stigmatize female victims of sexual assault. I saw that this march was taking place in different countries such as Europe, Asia, and India. It was very interesting so we decided to go and I brought my daughter with me to show our support. Once we got there we see 50+ people making signs and waiting for the rally to start.   Before it started there was a speaker which was a high school girl talking about her experience with sexual assault and bullying in high school and how if anything like that happens you need to speak up and tell someone. After her speech everyone started to gather and were told the planned route we were going to march on. I look around and see many people of different races, people with disabilities and genders. It’s crazy to think that these types of things can happen to anyone, not just women. According to RAINN 1 out of 6 women and 1 out of 10 males are raped or assaulted each year. Sexual assault has no preference and we need to bring awareness to end rape culture and its stigma. Such as, if you wear something deemed â€Å"slutty†, it does not automatically give consent. As we walked down University Avenue with our signs and as I pushed my daughter in her stroller many people began to yell out â€Å"yaaaaaaasss† and â€Å"fuck yeah!† out their windows. But along with this support I also received weird stares because I brought my daughter with me, but I didn’t really care. People honked their horns to show support and it made the crowd happy. We got a couple people catcalling and whistling because some of our rally members were dressed provocatively, such as fishnet stockings and bras, which just made the crowd chant â€Å"no means no!† even louder. As we walked you could hear many people chanting different things like â€Å"end rape culture â€Å"or â€Å"our body, our choice.† After marching for close to an hour we came to our destination and were told by the rally members that everyone was invited to join them down the street for water on this hot. Reading some of the signs were inspiring and made me empathetic towards their experiences which overall, made me even more open-minded. I was glad that my daughter and I attended this rally even though she had no idea what was going on. I wanted her to experience it and hopefully also inspire her to let her know that she is strong and that anything is possible if you try. I want her to feel like she matters and that she’s important. Down the street we all met at Back To The Grind, which is a coffee shop, art gallery, and music venue in Downtown Riverside. We went in to grab some coffee, saw that there was a live band playing and vendors who had set up booths to sell their hand-printed shirts and other goods. As I was walking around browsing from vendor to vendor, I saw that one of them were a selling handmade zines. Zines are like magazines that are usually self-published and filled content chosen solely by the author/creator. This zine in particular was called â€Å"Riot Grrrl†, which is an underground feminist punk movement that began in the early 1990’s in Washington state. It is a subcultural movement that combines feminist consciousness with punk style and politics. It was a good reading, it was about how these women got inspired by the music they listened to such as bikini kill, Le tigre, and the gossip. These bands were fronted by female vocalists who used their platform to expose women to f eminism. They wanted to make sure that their voices were heard and that their words would empowered women so that they might be able to do the same. They also talked about their experiences and the stigma women face every day. Such as the way a woman is supposed to dress, the lack of female politicians, views on rape culture, and how women are expected to be stay at home moms. There are still so many stereotypes that women continue to face to this day. After walking nearly the entire day, I finally got the chance to lay down and reflect on this experience, I was exhausted. I finished reading through some of the zines I was given and felt truly empowered by that day’s experience. I hoped that everyone who participated in Slutwalk also felt this same level of empowerment and inspiration. Hopefully for those who did see our signs, were also curious enough to look into the meanings behind them. Especially younger girls, I want them to stick up for themselves or have their voices heard and be strong. I want rape culture to end so people can stop saying â€Å"you got raped because you were asking for it.† I wish that all the stereotypes and stigma women face every day can just disappear. I know it doesn’t take a day but I hope me marching in Riverside made somewhat of an impact on someone or even just letting them be aware of things that are happening in the world. I want everyone, not just women to know that rape cu lture is alive and we need to bring awareness to it and end it. This march made a big impact on my life, it made me more aware of things. It helped me stand up for myself, and let me know that women are enough and that we matter. It made me the person I am today. Finally, I turned off the lights, laid on my bed and put on â€Å"Rebel girl† by Bikini kill and went to bed.

10 Ways to Find 10 Minutes to Write

10 Ways to Find 10 Minutes to Write 10 Ways to Find 10 Minutes to Write 10 Ways to Find 10 Minutes to Write By Ali Hale How long do you need to write? We often think its not worth sitting down and starting a piece unless we have a whole afternoon clear – but even finding a spare hour can sometimes seem impossible. Try thinking differently about the time you need to write: one ten-minute session, six days a week, adds up to an hour. That could be a blog post, a scene of a novel, a poem, the outline of a new book proposal Heres ten ways to find at least ten minutes to write, ways you can reclaim annoying â€Å"lost† time and put it to good use. However busy you are, you can manage one of these today: 1. Write first thing in the morning Create an extra ten minutes in your day by setting your alarm early: get up, grab your notebook (or switch on your laptop) and sneak in ten minutes of writing while everyone else is still asleep. 2. Write on the train If you get the train (or bus, or tube) to work or school, write on the way. Some trains and coaches have power sockets for your laptop, but all you really need is a pad of paper and a pen. 3. Write while youre standing in line Next time you get stuck in a long line at the post office or bank, whip out your notebook and start scribbling down a few ideas for your next piece of writing. 4. Inaugural Address by John F. Kennedy Speech or Presentation

Inaugural Address by John F. Kennedy - Speech or Presentation Example Written by Kennedy himself, along with his speechwriter Ted Sorenson, the speech is considered to be one of the best given by Kennedy as well as one of the best given by any United States President. The primary audience of the speech was, indeed, the United States public, however, the speech also addressed the citizens and governments of the world at large, touching on universal themes of peace and justice. The speech opens with a very effective hook, by talking about the victory of his party, Kennedy draws the audience in by proclaiming the event to be a beginning of change as well as the start of renewing the rich traditions of United States. The memorable speech opening clearly established the basis for the main body of the speech. The speech was focused – clearly and effectively touching on themes of a need for a new beginning in the face of the then present stale relations between the two Cold War opponents (the United States and the Soviet Union). Recalling images of the glorious past of the United States, and the ideals on which it was found, the speech employed metaphors, especially religious ones, as well as symbolism, and that too having religious undertones. Kennedy talked about the metaphorical torch that had been passed to his generation when he spoke of his presidency. It was, altogether, very easy to follow the speech as it flowed, and was organized, quite logically, with Kennedy ensuring that the conclusion of his speech was concise, memorable and a call to action. The now famous words â€Å"Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country† (Kennedy) were part of his inaugural address. Kennedy relied on words alone to deliver his message. No visual aids were used in the speech, the only mental imagery was evoked in a bid to get the public excited and hopeful about the future in general, and the Kennedy administration in particular. Kennedy sounded a bit nervous, although his enthusiasm shows th rough in the choice of his words as well as his hopeful tone for the change he sought to bring about with regard to the United States itself and its relationship with the outside world. Kennedy accomplished this by maximizing the role of the audience in the change to come by using inclusive language as well as by addressing the audience directly (i.e. using you and we focused language). The audience cheered during the speech and clapped, however, other than that there was no audience interaction. The tone of the speech was somber and serious, there was no levity or humor worked into the speech. Moreover, Kennedy stayed on the podium during the whole speech and did not move around or use the stage to augment his words. Overall, Kennedy seemed very confident, although a little bit nervous. His posture showed his poise and assurance, though he did not use gestures to supplement or stress his words. Though Kennedy was reading the speech as he had not memorized it, yet he tried to keep a s much eye contact as possible with the audience. Since he did not have any distracting mannerisms, his lack of constant eye contact did not take away from the speech.

Stagecoach Essay -- essays papers

Stagecoach An Interpretation of 'Stagecoach' In 1939 John Ford masterminded a classical western film by the name of Stagecoach. This film has the integrity of a fine work of art. Being that it could be considered a work of art, the impression left on a viewing audience could differ relying on the audience's demographics. However, it is conceivable to all audiences that Ford delivers a cast of characters that are built on stereotypes and perceptions conjured from 'B' westerns that preceded this film's time. Each character is introduced to the audience in a stereotypical genre, as the film progresses, these stereotypes are broken down and the characters become more humanized. This is apparent with a handful of characters being portrayed better than others. One can investigate each individual character to correlate such a pattern. The characters are, in no particular order: Curly, Hatfield, Gatewood, Peacock, the stagecoach driver, Dallas, Lady Mallory, and of course Ringo. Robert Slotkin writes in Gunfighter nation, " . . . by 1890 it was clear that the industrialization of the economy had produced a social order in which wealth and power would increasingly be concentrated in the hands of relatively few men . . . "(p 31). It was this social order that influenced iconography of many 'B' westerns. Such iconography would create the ideal of the crooked banker, or the shoot em' up outlaw and even a brothel prostitute, all of which are found in Ford's Stagecoach. The social classes that each character can generally be categorized as an upper, middle and lower class. In Stagecoach the upper class is composed of Gatewood and Lady Mallory. Gatewood is first introduced as a stern and modest character and part remains to be for most of the film. He exemplifies the 'B' western icon of the crooked banker in every manner. His crooked behavior is not revealed until the end of the film climaxing at his arrest as the stagecoach reaches town. His actions are arrogant and always in line with a financial mind set. His main focus was bag full of money, nothing else. Even as the stagecoach was under siege by the savage Indians, the audience could catch a glimpse of Gatewood clasping his bag rather than brandishing a firearm. Gatewood's character is one of those that does not stray from the 'B' side icon. He is clearly plays the stereotype of the financia... ...le and by Curly. On the contrary when Ringo is first seen in the movie he is not violent nor is he much of a menace. He seems to be a real gentle man, as one may have noticed in his actions toward Dallas even after finding what her line of work was. He is not ill mannered nor tempermental. He is on a mission to seek revenge as any man rightfully would. He is a far cry from his gun toting tobacco spitting counterpart in the ‘B' westerns. The stagecoach driver is the last of these unique characters. Typically, he is charactered in ‘B' westerns as being filthy, blockheaded and offensive. Despite his crackled voice and foolish nature, the stagecoach driver was anything but these descriptions. Granted, at times he may not have said the smartest of things or have been the bravest of men during the film, but he does come off as a sensible good minded man. Every character of Ford's Stagecoach was derived from the ‘B' westerns to years before. Each one is usually introduced in that genre of the ‘B' western. Ford has a unique way he portrays these characters. He shed new light on stereotypes that are not commonly broken. It truly was one of the many factors that made this film unique.

Transatlantic Change in North American Colonies

Included in these changes were: lab or source, kinds of labor, organization of labor, race and the types of crops/ agriculture needed. These changes ere more significant because they lead to even more changes, development s, improvements, troubles, etc. Which all lead to society today. Over time, the demand for labor remained the same; things needed to be pro educed, which meant labor was needed in order to provide suppliers/ consumers with whatever they wanted/ needed. The source of that needed labor, however, did change. Indentured SE ravens were the source of labor throughout the colonies, but in 161 9, the first group of people were brought from Africa to the Americas to become slaves. To some, slavery was discovered to be much cheaper and more efficient that indentured servitude: mass amount s of Africans could be brought over to America at once, and they could easily be sold and try added anywhere among the colonies where need be.To others though, there wasn't much of a need for slaves. People still favored indentured servants, whom they'd been using for q tutee a while already, because they felt more of a personal servitude with them, so they we area bit reluctant to give them up. Indentured servitude would soon be almost overshadowed b slavery though, because 30 years after 1 793, comes the cotton gin which will raise the importance of plantations, thus increasing slave demand.Even still though, the labor source changed from indentured servitude to slavery, as did a change occur from subsistence farm s to plantations. With this change from farms to plantations, came a change from subsistence crops to marketed crops such as tobacco and, the most famous, cotton; all of this can be seen as a result of the major population growth and expansion of the county, as well a importation/ exportation changes (trading slaves for goods, triangular trade). To restate, concluding, continuity was maintained in aspects such as demand d/need for labor, need for crops/ agric ulture, importation, etc. It was the changes (labor source, which crops/ type of agriculture is used, what is being imported/ exported) that occurred from transatlantic interactions that hold even more significance because they lead t o changes, improvements, developments, etc.
